Tanzanian SGR "a game changer" in Africa

Tanzania is in the process of introducing electric trains to its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, marking a significant step forward in modernizing its transportation infrastructure and boosting connectivity across the nation.
Here are some key details about the project:
 * Train type: Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains with a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour (kph).
 * Route: The initial phase focuses on the 300-kilometer line between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro which will start operating in July 2024, with plans to expand to Mwanza and Kigoma in the future.
 * Benefits: Reduced travel times, increased efficiency for cargo and passenger transport, and potential for economic growth through improved connectivity.
The introduction of electric trains is expected to have a major impact on Tanzania's transportation sector. The faster speeds will significantly reduce travel times, making rail travel a more attractive option for both passengers and freight. Additionally, the electric trains are more environmentally friendly than traditional diesel locomotives, which will help to reduce Tanzania's carbon footprint.
The project is in its latest stages and it has the potential to transform Tanzania's transportation landscape. When complete, it could serve as a model for other African countries looking to because the Tanzania's electric option will offer a long term sustainability advantage unlike the Kenyan SGR which provides immediate benefits
